A campus journalist and final year student of the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Ibadan, Timileyin Precious Akinmoyeje has emerged winner of the Fisayo Soyombo Inter-varsity Essay Contest.
Akinmoyeje and the first and second runner-ups were announced at the UCJUI induction and Famous Five Awards (FFA) ceremony on April 1, 2023, at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan.
Akinmoyeje, who is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Independence Hall Press (Indy Press), in his speech, acknowledged the efforts of Indypress Editor-in-chief, John ‘Dare Okafor, for his contribution towards his success in writing the essay and finally clinching the award.
“I had missed the first deadline for the essay and was four days away from the second deadline when he (Okafor) called me and encouraged me to write the essay,” he said.
The monetary prizes attached to the awards are a sum of N250,000 for Akinmoyeje, the overall winner; N150,000 for John Oghenemaro, the first runner-up, and N100,000 for Ogunsola Emmanuel Oladayo, the second runner-up. And certificates were presented to other finalists including Bethel Olujobi; Daniel Ibikunle, Precious Ifeoma Olisakwe.
The sponsor of the essay contest, Mr Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation of Investigative Journalism, was present at the event to present the awards to the winners and certificates to two other candidates who made the top-five shortlist.
