The executive council of the Students’ Union, University of Ibadan, on Wednesday, disbursed bursaries to 35 students who were selected for the union’s 2022 bursary scheme.
The 35 students were selected from a pool of 310 applicants, after going through different stages of screening.
Each beneficiary received the sum of N20,000
According to the Chairman of the screening committee, Samson Samuel, 158 students were shortlisted from 310 applications; 89 students were interviewed, while 35 were selected.
At an event, which was held at the chamber of the Students’ Representative Council, the selected students were presented award letters, with which they will get their checks.
The Dean of students, Professor Keye Abiona, while speaking at the event, encouraged the students to make the best of the opportunity given to them.
Prof. Abiona shared his experience as an indigent undergraduate student of the university, who depended on bursaries and grants from the government. “I was an indigent student, so I know what it feels like. I benefitted from bursaries from the Oyo state government then, and a federal government loan, which we didn’t pay back. That was how I got through school,” he recalled.
The Dean hailed the executive council, headed by Adewole Adeyinka, for the scheme. He also assured the union of the management’s support, and that of his office.
He urged the beneficiaries of the bursary scheme to do well in their studies for good grades, and also engage in extracurricular activities.
“Focus on your studies so that you can have good grades. Their are many scholarships you may benefit from if you have a good CGPA. Also, have core values, and also participate in other activities on campus. Pass through school, and let the school pass through you.”
