
The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan is teaming up with the Student Media and Information Literacy Club to mark the celebration of Global Media Literacy Week. This exciting event is scheduled to take place within the University of Ibadan community from October 23rd to 25th, 2023. The central theme for this event is “Media and Information Literacy in Digital Spaces: A Collective Global Agenda for All Nigerians.”
Global Media and Information Literacy Week is an annual initiative that aligns with UNESCO’s Media and Information Literacy Week, focusing on the evaluation and promotion of Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
This three-day event is designed to raise awareness about Media and Information Literacy, educate young individuals about the dangers of misinformation and disinformation, and empower youth with essential skills related to Media and Information Literacy.
Oluwatobi Odeyinka, the President of the Union of Campus Journalists, emphasized the significance of events like this in the current landscape, saying, “The spread of fake news and deliberate distortion of facts are on the rise, so there is no better time to intensify the campaign on media and information literacy than now. The UCJ UI as the Chief Press outfit in the University of Ibadan, welcomes the partnership with SMIL to commemorate the global media and information literacy week. I personally look forward to the events lined up for this year.”
The Co-founder and also, Managing Director of the Students Media and Information Literacy Club, Oluwakorede Ajibona, also expressed his motivation for organizing the event, stating, “We are organizing this event to celebrate the Global MIL Week because we strongly believe that media and information literacy is not just a skill; it is a superpower that empowers individuals to navigate an increasingly complex world. We are inviting everyone to join us in recognizing the importance of media and information literacy in shaping a brighter, more informed future for all”.
