The student union presidential debate

The student union presidential debate which was organized by the union of campus journalist held on Saturday 8of May 2015 in which there are four aspirants vying for the post of the student union president and two aspirants vying for the post of the vice president.

The student union presidential aspirants are:

  2. k.aaah! Speaker
  3. k.aKcent
  4. ToyosiAkinloye Grace a.k.a Tag

The vice presidential aspirants are;

  1. ChibuzorDeborah Oginia.k.a CDO
  2. k.aSope

The programme which was slated for 10am started some minutes after due to the lateness of some of the aspirants.

The program began with the debates of the aspiring vice-presidents. Mosope and Chibuzor, who gave the plans and goals they would like to achieve for the union. CDO specifically stated that she would create a community development scheme where the students would give back to the society in return for what they have gained.

Sope in her speech promised social welfarism as well as academic excellence as well as deal with pressing needs of the students more intellectually and not violently.

There was a published result of the screening exercise, which was held on Thursday by the electoral body, which disqualifies John Adebanjo a.k.a Johnexto from vying for the post of the student union president. He was however allowed to speak at the debate because according to the president of the Union of Campus Journalist (UCJ), Miss Tawakalit, no official release with the university logo and the right signature stating the fact that jonexto has been disqualified from the election was received by the Union prior to the debate.

The presidential aspirants gave their plans and programs if elected as the president of the Union. Among which are to protect the lives and property of the students, improve transportation sector, adequate water supply, adequate electricity, get a legal adviser for the students, and many more. 

The resolutions of the student union congress held on the 7th of May, 2015.

A student union congress was held in the spirit of the Aluta struggle and student mass movement over the death of a 200 level student of the department of human kinetics and health education, Mr. Alaran Mayowa.

The congress was conveyed at the student union building in line with the provision of the students union constitution, precisely article XX(B) which provides that:

“The decision of the congress on any matter shall be final”.It was resolved that there was a necessity for a valid congress to be immediately conveyed to address the appropriate issues.

The congress was presided over by the acting vice-president who happens to be the General Secretary, Comrade Adeboye Babatunde (kanran). This was done in line with the provision of article XIX(a) of the students union’s constitution: “the president shall be the chairman of the congress.In his absence, the vice-president or in that other, the speaker or any member elected by a validly constituted congress”.

Although, various attempts were made to bring the speaker and the deputy speaker to the congress but all efforts proved futile. It was upon this ground that the congress invoked the power of the constitution therefore,the general secretary, currently acting as the vice-president was summoned to preside over the congress.

In a bid to ensure clarity of purpose and due documentation, comrade TokunboSalako presided over the election of an acting General Secretary for the day’s congress. The trio of comrade TemitopeAwolusi, Onele peter- Cole and Ilesanmi Damilola was nominated for the secretary of the congress and Onele Peter-Cole a 400level student of law was by absolute majority elected as the acting secretary of the congress for the day.

The congress further deliberated upon an eleven (11) point demand list which was presented by the NnamdiAzikiwe hall chairman in person of comrade Oluwafemi a.k.a ‘flamez’ which was later expanded to a thirteen (13) point demand. The demands duly adopted are as follows:

  1. Immediate assigning of ambulances to all halls of residence on campus
  2. Swift and immediate response to all medical health issues whether emergency or not.
  3. Immediate address and resolution of the water issues in Zik Hall, Awo Hall, Queens Hall and all halls of residence and the removal of Tedder hall barricade &toll gates.
  4. A condolence visit to the family of the deceased be led by the Vice-chancellor and appropriate befitting compensation for his family.
  5. A letter of apology and guaranty of student’s health and well-being by the University Health service
  6. That there be at least twenty-four (24) hours of power supply on daily basis.
  7. There should be an immediate stop on the victimization of students in female hostels by portals and dehumanizing treatment in male hostels.

8.There should be no further monopolization of water and Bread in the University community.

  1. No to jaja card request in case of emergencies.Treat the patient first! Safety first!
  2. Renovation of the halls of residence and their facilities: Wi-Fi, Hot plates and bad lights should be replace.
  3. That the demands are met or some be seen to be met within a week’s time or the struggle will continue.
  4. The unnecessary imposition of fees e.g. #20,000 archaeology fees, Animal science oppression should stop.
  5. Immediate stop on the double collection of the GES Fees at GSP.

The congress finally resolved that the thirteen-point demands be fronted by the executive council of the students before the school management. It was further agreed upon the suggestion of comrade Oluwafemi ‘flamez’of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, that the congress be re-converged on Monday the 11th May, 2015 by 5pm.
