Student Associations’ Dues must not exceed 2000 naira—-UISU SRC

 The University of Ibadan Students’ Union legislative Arm-Students’ Representative Council has resolved that executives of the halls of residence, faculties and departmental students’ association must not charge their fellow students a due above N2000.

This resolution which was made at the last sitting of the SRC was accompanied by other resolution that dinners and shirt should not be made compulsory on any students not even the freshmen as it been practiced by some students’ association.

A brief interaction with the speaker of the SRC, Rt. Hon., Arogundade Toheeb said the Dean of Students have lauded their effort in bringing forth this regulation and promised to work with faculties’ deans and wardens of every halls of residence to ensure that this resolution is effective. He gave an analysis of total money generated and there are no tangible capital project done by these organisations. He said a total of 18 million naira is been generated with an average of the dues charged for this session.

UCJ correspondents have also gathered from the University of Ibadan Students their reactions on the resolution. Most students are happy and they commended the effort of the 5th assembly on this move. While most are saying, “Our Students’ Union is gradually coming back to live”; others are saying “The SRC is restoring sanity to our Students’ associations and curbing the heaps of corruption that cut across every nook and crannies in these associations during this 2014/2015 academic session”.

The speaker and the entire UI students however urged the leaders of these associations not too use this opportunity in placing their dues at N2000 which is the maximum.

In a related issue concerning the academic welfare of the students, the SRC came to conclusion that the faculties’ Lecture theatre and Kenneth Dike Library should be opened for overnight reading two weeks before the examination period; though when UCJ correspondents gathered that Kenneth Dike Library is been locked by 10pm and some officials present at the moment where asked questions why the library is been locked, they said “Renovations are still on going in the library”

The academic committee has also been charged to work on the confidentiality of the Undergraduate Result booklet for the senate popularly known as “book of life”; likewise the welfare committee was charged to act on the depreciating value of UI bread and UI water.
