Mrs Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah, FCA, has assumed office as the University of Ibadan’s first female Bursar in the institution’s 78-year history.
Zakariyah took over the university’s Bursary following the completion of the tenure of her predecessor, Mr Adewuyi Popoola.
Speaking at her assumption-of-office ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, described her emergence as a reflection of the university’s longstanding institutional tradition and commitment to excellence.
The VC said that the University of Ibadan was founded on a tradition of excellence, adding that orderly leadership transitions had remained one of the institution’s sources of strength.
He commended Popoola for his service to the university and his role in maintaining its financial stability during his tenure. The Vice-Chancellor also stated that the process leading to Zakariyah’s appointment was fair and without gender or religious bias.
He said the university’s reputation extended beyond its immediate environment, noting that its activities were guided by values of excellence, integrity and service.
According to him, the university’s standing was not determined solely by its physical structures but also by how it conducted its affairs and upheld its institutional values.
For Zakariyah, assuming office marks the beginning of her responsibility to lead the Bursary in fulfilling its mandate.
The new Bursar expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for ensuring what she described as a fair and seamless appointment process.
She pledged to deploy her professional expertise towards effective service delivery and to justify the confidence placed in her, while seeking the continued support of the university management.
The assumption-of-office ceremony also featured prayers for Zakariyah’s tenure from the Chief Imam of the University of Ibadan, Professor Ibrahim Olatunde Uthman, and the Chaplain of the Chapel of the Resurrection, the Venerable Dr Victor Idowu Oladele.
Zakariyah’s assumption of office makes her the first woman to occupy the position of Bursar at the University of Ibadan.
