Diary of a UITE: Episode 1

It’s a new session with a different taste and awesomeness. The new session is always filled with euphoria of finalists becoming finalists, stallites being a step ahead and the new intakes ecstatic about the campus life.

As I made my way to the right side of the gate to board a transport to Queens hall I can’t help but laugh when a fresher said: “Senior, can I ask you a question?”. Anyways I answered her and pointed her to a cab heading for SUB and even added that the fee is #30. I can’t forgive myself for paying a bike man #500 to go to Education in my freshman year.

I gently alighted from the cab feeling on top of the world. It feels so good to be in your ultimate year. The cab man made his way to the back to help me offload. As usual my load tripled the one I went home with. I can’t afford to act like a big girl after that compulsory hunger strike last semester.

After the usual stop and search, Tope and I made our way to my new block and room. Being a finalist comes with its own benefits like being entitled to have only one roommate. Tope and I have been friends since our fresh man year and being in the same hall and department made everything easier. She’s my best friend but beware she’s a chatterbox.

Later in the day after unpacking, I joined Tope in her room. Apparently, there were a thousand heads. Maybe that’s an exaggeration but I couldn’t count. My brain could register some familiar faces- Sola, Bridget, Maggie, Chinelo…. Yea! Everywhere was bustling as greetings and gists rented the air. Everyone was talking about the holiday.

“Hi babes” I greeted but only few acknowledged me. They were all engrossed in Chinelo’s gist.

“….the IT was my best ever. Like ever.” She trailed off finishing her story.

“Guys! Who’s excited about this year’s show? BbNaija will be back this month” Bridget screamed as if her life depended on it.

“Abeg aabeg abeg…….” Typical Tope frowned. She’s not a fan as she describes it as a tool to promote moral decadence among youths.

“Me I’m interested o. I dey watch out for it. It’s WAHALA time” Chinelo said making movements with her non-curvy body.

” Then gist about it in private” Tope replied sending her daggers look.

” Guys! I have a date and I’m confused about what to wear. It’s not really a big thing so I guess I should go casual a little?” someone I later learned as Simbiat and Tope’s new roommate changed the discussion.

“Babygirl, I will help you with that.” Chinelo moved swiftly to her side. There was a brief silence before Sola broke it and murmured:

” How I wish this semester could be free for me. My project is enough load”

“Welcome to the first and the best. Nothing is without stress in it.” Tope chuckled.

“Sola did I just hear you complain? You don’t even have to defend your project” Chinelo chirped in joining the conversation. Simbiat has left the room to take her bath now. ‘She has finally decided’ I said to myself.

“Oh! Please. Do you know I have started classes already? While you guys are still gallivanting around. It’s not a matter of pride. Law is not easy…”

“Save us that bull shit please. Everyone cannot be a book wworm like you you know?” Maggie who has kept quiet interrupted Sola. Sola sudennly became livid and arguments proceeded from it. I made eye contact with Tope and we both left the room. “No one should add to my headache jae.” I thought.
