The University of Ibadan students’ community has been alerted to a fraudulent scheme involving an individual impersonating a staff member of the institution’s administrative system.
In a public notice dated 06 June 2026, the Council of Faculty Presidents (COFP) warned students about a man who identifies himself as “Dr Bankole” and falsely claims to represent the university’s Exams and Records Unit.
According to the notice, “the individual has been contacting students via phone calls and messages, requesting various sums of money under questionable pretences. The number currently associated with this activity is: +234 906 309 3201 and the individual may contact students using other phone numbers.”
It also urged students to “exercise caution and verify any information purportedly coming from the Exams and Records Unit through official university channels.”
The council emphasised that no legitimate unit within the University of Ibadan requests payments through personal accounts, private phone numbers, or unofficial communication channels. “Legitimate university offices do not request payments through personal accounts, unofficial contacts, or unauthorised means, and any such request should be treated as suspicious and reported to the appropriate authorities.” the notice said.
In essence, the warning highlights a growing pattern of digital impersonation and social engineering tactics, where fraudsters exploit institutional trust and student anxiety around academic processes to pressure victims into making quick financial decisions.
The COFP described such attempts as entirely unauthorised and deceptive, urging students to remain vigilant and avoid any form of engagement with suspicious contacts.
