The University of Ibadan (UI), through its Student Affairs Division, has scheduled a fire-safety training programme for hall wardens, nominated hall personnel and students ahead of the planned introduction of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking in the Halls of Residence.
According to an internal memorandum dated September 26, 2026, signed by the Dean of Students, Demola Lewis, the training will be held on Monday, September 28, at Trenchard Hall by 1:30pm.
The programme, organised as a Train-the-Trainers session, follows the Vice-Chancellor’s directive that LPG use in the halls should commence only after the necessary safety measures have been put in place and residents have received adequate training.
The memorandum recalled that hall wardens had previously nominated participants for the training and submitted requests for fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.
Wardens were directed to attend with nominated officers and students from their respective halls. Suggested participants include assistant wardens, welfare officers, hall executives, defence ministers, floor representatives, as and where applicable, members of the Man O’ War and Red Cross. However, citing the short notice, the Dean stated that participation could be extended to other hall members who are available to attend the programme.
A total of 240 participants have been allocated across 15 halls of residence. Obafemi Awolowo Hall has the highest allocation with 25 participants, while Abdulsalami Abubakar, Alexander Brown, Independence, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Queen Idia halls have each been allocated 20 participants.
The memorandum urged hall wardens to comply with the invitation and ensure the participation of their nominated representatives as preparations continue for the introduction of LPG cooking in the halls.
