The President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, Temidayo S. Adeboye, has issued a notice dissociating the Students’ Union from the Students’ Legislative Summit scheduled to be held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan.
The notice, dated September 22, stated that the Students’ Union had noted the programme but had not authorised any representation of the Union at the event.
It also stated that the University Management had not endorsed the programme and that no representative of the Management would be present at the event.
“The University Management has also not endorsed the event, and no representative of the University Management will be present at the programme,” the notice stated.
It further stated that the Students’ Union was unable to assure students of the programme’s intentions, structure and implications of the programme. The notice consequently advised students to exercise caution and refrain from attending or participating in the programme.
According to the notice, the position was informed by the responsibility to protect the welfare, dignity and safety of students. It added that where circumstances surrounding a programme raise legitimate concerns, and the Union cannot assure students that their best interests are being sought, a notice of the nature becomes necessary.
However, a subsequent message circulated on the communication channel for the legislative summit addressed the status of the President’s notice.
The message stated that the memo was “singlehandedly” signed by the President and “is not the decision of the Students Union.”
The channel also announced that the legislative summit was still holding and directed participants to make their way to their designated pick-up points and subsequently to the International Conference Centre.
The development has consequently placed two different positions on the status of the President’s notice in the public domain, with Adeboye’s notice stating that the Students’ Union had not authorised representation at the programme, while the subsequent summit communication stated that the notice was not a decision of the Students’ Union.
