The first round of the Seals Cup quarter final matches took place today, 16th June 2025 at the old SUB pitch with Geology facing off against Petroleum Engineering in the first match of the day. In a tightly contested matchup between both sides, Geology dominated for the most part of the game but failed to convert their momentum into goals, ultimately falling 2-0 to a more clinical Petroleum Engineering side in a game marked by missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
The opening ten minutes saw Geology in full control, pressing high and probing Petroleum’s backline in search of an early advantage. Despite their intent, Geology lacked precision in the final third. Petroleum Engineering weathered the early storm and gradually grew into the game, winning a corner in the 12th minute which was well dealt with by the Geology defense.
The breakthrough in the game finally came in the 25th minute. A defensive mishap in the Geology box saw the ball fall kindly for Petroleum’s Ajibola, who made no mistake in slotting home past the exposed goalkeeper to put his side 1-0 up. Geology nearly responded instantly, firing wide just a minute later and forcing a stunning double save from the Petroleum goalkeeper in the 28th minute. Geology continued to apply pressure, but the Petroleum Engineering defense held firm to maintain their slender lead going into halftime
The second half resumes with more intent from Geology as Petroleum Engineering absorbed the pressure and attempted counters. Early in the second half, there was a Geology appeal for a penalty off from a foul in the box 18 but the referee ruled that the foul occurred just outside the box. He also awarded a FreeKick to Geology and the resulting freekick led to a scramble in the box which nearly produces the equalizer, but again, the Petroleum Engineering Goalkeeper was quick to smother the ball.Geology continued in their search for an equalizer as Prosper’s freekick was safely parries away.
Despite controlling large portions of the game, Geology was inefficient in front of goal.Despite Geology throwing bodies forward in search of an equalizer, Petroleum Engineering soon capitalized late on in the second half of the game, adding a second goal to put the result beyond doubt and to seal the win.In a game of Geology’s blunt execution and Petroleum Engineering’s disciplines defense, the scoreline stood 2-0 in favour of the tech boys and secured them a spot in the semi-finals.
