FACULTY OF SCIENCE HOLDS MEDICAL OUTREACH PROGRAMME

Faculty of Science Management held a Medical  Outreach, themed “Health Challenges in Academia” on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, at the Faculty of Science Lakeside Lecture theatre.

The programme, which was hosted by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Bakare, to help Students and staff lead a sustainable healthy life, began with the Medical checkup for each participant, followed by the introduction of the guests: the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Adebowale, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju; and others.

The first lecture, on Mental Health Challenges in Academia, was given by Dr Jibril Abdulmalik, a Psychiatrist at the University College Hospital (UCH). Dr Jibril focused on physical, social and mental health, with emphasis on the need for good mental health in fulfilling one’s purposes, coping with the stress of day-to-day life, and working productively. He also shared some tips that can help in dealing with mental health, quoting that as we know better, we will do better.

The second lecture was on Diabetes and Hypertension in Academia, delivered by Dr Temilola Akande, a physician and endocrinologist. She emphasised the need for regular and consistent medical checkups, owing to the fact statistical reports give, showing that many suffer from these diseases because of unchecked health status. She also noted that many of these diseases could have been prevented or at most, managed optimally if proper checkups and care had been administered.

The second lecture was proceeded by a question & answer session where some participants asked questions related to health and general well-being.

The third and final lecture was delivered by Dr Aderonke B. Ajav, the Head of Operations at the University Health Service. Shortly after she came on stage, she introduced a physiotherapist from the UCH, Dr Ibidunni Alonge, who led a brief session with the participants; and also emphasised the need for a healthy life activities and tools.

Dr Ajav talked on Health Issues in Academia: our Experience at Jaja Clinic. She gave a general note on their experiences at the University Health Centre; how they deal with several people with several health issues; the challenges they face, as well as their accomplishments. She also gave some useful and beneficial health tips.

Dr Ajav’s session was also proceeded by a Q & A session, followed by the vote of thanks by the Chairman Planning Committee, Prof.O.O. Sonibare, and then the National and University Anthems. The Medical outreach ended with another round of Medical check-up by the e-Dokita team.
