UI Deputy Registrar Disqualifies Elected UI’SRC Member

Nice Linus, a 300-level Law student at the University of Ibadan, has been disqualified from the newly elected Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

Nice, who was recently elected as the Majority Leader representing Obafemi Awolowo Hall, was deemed ineligible due to a pending disciplinary case.

The disqualification was formally communicated to the Speaker of the 11th Assembly, Opegbemi Busoye Matthias, through an internal memorandum signed by Mr. T.I. Musa, the Deputy Registrar and Chairman of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Electoral Commission. The memo, dated Tuesday, 4th of March 2025, was also copied to the Warden and Chairperson of Obafemi Awolowo Hall.

According to the memorandum, Nice Linus’ election was an “oversight,” as university regulations clearly prohibit students with unresolved disciplinary cases from contesting or holding elected positions.

“This appears to have been an oversight, as the University regulations clearly state that students with pending disciplinary cases are not eligible to contest or hold any elected positions until their cases are resolved.” the memorandum states

As a result of the disqualification, Miss Olaleye Abolaji Joy, who was the runner-up in the election with 89 points, has been declared the new Majority Leader who will represent Obafemi Awolowo Hall in the 12th Assembly.

“This outcome requires a necessary change in the composition of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) for the 12th Assembly, as Miss Olaleye Abolaji Joy, who scored 89 points, automatically becomes the majority leader.”

The document further confirmed that Nice would no longer be a member of the SRC, stating, “This change means that Miss Nice Linus ceases to be a member of the new Students’ Representative Council,” effectively stripping her of the position she recently won.
