The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJ UI), has announced the ninth edition of its annual ‘Fisayo Soyombo Inter-Varsity Essay Competition ‘, inviting undergraduate students across Nigerian universities to examine the country’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The competition, themed “2027 and Beyond: Do Elections Still Deliver Democracy for Nigerians?”, encourages young Nigerians to critically assess the country’s electoral system and contribute meaningful ideas to national discourse.

The organisers announced a total prize pool of ₦900,000, with the first-place winner set to receive ₦400,000, the second-place winner ₦300,000, and the third-place winner ₦200,000.

The competition is open to undergraduate students of universities across Nigeria. Essays must be 1,500 to 2,000 words, typed in Times New Roman, font size 12, with 1.5 line spacing.

Interested participants are required to submit their essays alongside copies of their valid student identity cards to ucjunibadan@gmail.com. The submission deadline is November 22, 2026.

The annual competition brings together undergraduates to examine national issues and offer perspectives on matters affecting the country. This year’s theme places electoral democracy under scrutiny as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was signed by Utibe Emmanuel, Editor-in-Chief of UCJ UI, and Adebumowa Jesutomiwo Adejumoke, President of the union.
