UI Students’ Union Calls for Pause in Avoidable Tree Felling Amid Intense Heat

The Students’ Union, University of Ibadan (UI’SU), has called for a pause in avoidable tree felling within the university community, citing concerns over rising temperatures and changing weather conditions.

The call was contained in an official statement signed by the Students’ Union President, Temidayo S. Adeboye, and General Secretary, Joshua O. Shontan.

The statement highlighted the environmental and welfare implications of recent tree removal, noting that trees provide shade, regulate temperatures, improve air quality and support biodiversity.

“Trees are essential to a healthy campus environment,” the Union stated, emphasising the need to preserve the university’s green spaces and safeguard the welfare of students and other members of the university community.

While acknowledging that tree removal may sometimes be necessary for infrastructural development, operational requirements or safety reasons, the Union maintained that such activities should be properly justified and guided by appropriate environmental assessments.

It also called for replacement planting where practicable and urged timely communication with the university community regarding the reasons for tree removal, the scope of the activities and plans for environmental restoration.

As part of efforts to address the concerns, the Union disclosed that it had engaged the Student Affairs Division and the Dean of Students to seek clarification on the recent activities and explore possible measures to address the situation.

“We are particularly seeking consideration for a pause in avoidable tree felling during this period of intense heat, pending further clarification and engagement with the relevant authorities,” the statement read.

The Union reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the university management on issues concerning student welfare and environmental sustainability.

It expressed hope for a balanced approach that would accommodate legitimate institutional needs while protecting the interests and well-being of the university community.
