TLDS UI Set To Hold Jawwar Finals, Jawwar National November 15

The first edition of Jawwar intervarsity debate would hold alongside the finals for the Hall and Faculty category of Jawwar University of Ibadan at the International Conference Centre on November 15.

The new modalities for the final day of the competition was revealed to UCJUI in a statement by the President of The Literary and Debating Society, Ayeni Otito-Jesu.

According to the statement, the decision to have both the UI finals and the first ever national edition on the same day was reached at the society’s senate meeting last week Wednesday.

“Considering that exams are near already, it is only wise that we conclude everything at the first finals day,” Otito said.

“Looking at the aesthetics of what Jaw War has, the idea is to have these other institutions have a feel of the colourful nature of the tournament. Hence, it would be good to have both finals on the same day and have the closing ceremony all together.”

UCJUI gathered that the Jawwar national would feature one representative per invited school. This representative is expected to deliver a 5-minutes policy speech addressing a problem under the theme: Africa In The Era Of The New Normal.

Speaking on the modality to select UI’s representative for the national competition, Otito noted that the initial plan was to have the overall best speaker and a winning hall or Faculty present the second speaker but with the new structure a resolution was reached at the Senate meeting to put out a call for participation for other LnD members to take part in.

“Having the UI finals at ICC is a prestige that has the Society’s leadership leaving with the loudest ovation. It would be ideal to have the closing ceremony at ICC than invest in the UI finals and have a slacking National Finals at Trenchard hall — that wouldn’t make it different from any regular Inter-Varsity Debate that a hall or faculty would organise,” Otito added.
