Theft in Independence Hall, Who Do We Blame?

It is no news that this semester has been a season of silent cries for a lot of Katangites as men from the underworld have given a lot of Katangites reason to cry over stolen phones and other gadgets. A lot of factors have been blamed for the rampant thefts in the hall but blaming people or something is not enough to stop the thieves from striking again.

Many have stressed the need for scrapping the office of the Defence Commissioner due to the increasing level of theft in the hall that has made the office seem ineffective but before we rush to take actions, we have to consider a lot of things.

From findings, most of the theft cases are results of negligence of the victims. For example, sometime in April, two phones and a sum of money were stolen in a room on 2ndfloor Block B. One of the room’s occupants left the room without locking the door while the others were sleeping. In a case like this, who do we blame?  Is it the Defence Commissioner or the fellow that left the room without locking doors?

One would wonder why thieves will not steal properties in a room that is not locked by the occupants. Recently, the Defence Commissioner and some Marshalls went round the hall to cross-check if people lock their rooms or not. It is surprising that a lot of people did not lock their doors, some even enjoyed sleep so much that they didn’t wake up when they were woken up to keep their stuffs. Imagine if it was a thief that had entered the rooms? We are no more babies for God’s sake.

Just last week, a Samsung tab was found by IndyPress members in a location that could make the owner cry if the gadget had fallen into the hands of thieves? We should not forget that there are lots of opportunists among us who will always use of any available opportunity to perpetrate evils. Don’t give them reason to make you cry, keep your things.

These thefts will not be so much and threatening if we are security conscious. If we lock our doors, keep our gadgets well and take every extra pro-security step that come to our mind, we will be fine.
