IS LOVE ALONE ENOUGH FOR MARRIAGE?

It still baffles me to no end how and why many think LOVE alone is all that is needed in marriage, rendering them maritally handicapped and giving in to self exploitation. I can’t seem to fathom why some will deliberately turn themselves to playthings, enduring a non fruitful marriage that they saw indication of its failure even before establishment. Their reason for engaging in such self-destructive lifestyle beat my imagination. Its better you live single than marrying and living a single life. Many have bitten more than they can chew, and not because they took more than they can contain, but because they leaped before they look.

While you journey through this week’s story of MARRIAGE JOURNEY, have it in mind to discover if it’s true that love is the only prerequisite for marriage.

Not only that Modupe is from a family of five wives, her father is also a philanderer, he even believes that Modupe is a bastard who was brought to his home by the mother who is the second wife of his, Mr. James, Modupe’s supposed father. In few days now Modupe has been willing to share with his potential husband what she has been battling with, since Azeez just gave her a marriage proposal, prior to that time, Azeez had told Modupe all the secrets of his life and had asked her, if she also had any secret but she said no, that everything about her is no more a secret to him, they have been lovers since Junior secondary school two (now basic 8).

Their love story is unique of all, in the community, although none of them had the opportunity of furthering their academics since Jamb jam them, they decided to both learn trade, as Modupe underwent Photography training while Azeez took a mechanic training course. In less than five years they had their freedom. Azeez father who happens to be a clergy man, rented a shop for his child who is now a boss, although he and his only sister had lost their mother since they were kids but they never felt her absence for once because their step mother treated them more than their mother would have done, so much that whenever Modupe visited she had always wished she had such a wonderful family, but since destiny still pitched me to be a wife here, that am grateful of, she would always say to console herself.

As time went by, she still struggled with the untold secret, she kept on telling the story to people but changing the subject involve to sample their opinions to know how much the gravity of her misfortune is, the more she enquired the more heavy the fear became. She even at a point concluded that she would rather take the secret to her grave than wrecking her long time built love, but every time she saw her fiancé her heart beat, she trembled and sweat profusely that she even had to lie to him, Azeez when he discovered this, she kept on defending herself that she is claustrophobic (Fear of enclosed places) because most of the scene happened when they were alone in the room especially when they were to make love.

The guilt mind never disappeared it hunted her, though she made improvement on repressing the thought. Their love grew stronger daily, after a year of Azeez’s independence, he decided to celebrate his fiancée’s birthday in a grand style, and they started the feast at FIRST CHOICE eatery at Adetola bus stop along agbado crossing area of LAGOS-Ogun states. The feast started around noon, as Azeez invited some of his friend to Modupe’s 23rd birthday, the surprise package came almost at the end of the feast, even while Azeez was going to unleash the gift, his fiancée’s heart never stopped palpitating, she had excused herself to the toilet over 5 times, if not that they have known each other since high school, he would have thought Modupe is suffering from enuresis (urinary Incontinence, which could either be diurnal or nocturnal).

Immediately they left the eatery they both headed to a street close to Azeez’s shop to unveil the birthday gift, there in the big shop filled with different photographs he and Modupe had snapped, there was the birthday gift, a rented shop where Modupe will start working as a photographer. This has been all she had dreamt of becoming all her life, wao wao wao! She kept on exclaiming! She burst into tears and started crying uncontrollably, while she was crying, Azeez never knew why, he thought it was tears of joy; he never knew it was tears of regret. She quickly wiped off her tears when the fiancé pet her that, after all God had done it, she should be elated instead and not tears. After the party and unveiling of gift both parties departed to their respective houses, everyone from Modupe’s family knows Azeez it was easy for them all to accept the gift except for his “FATHER”. Mr. James the philanderer who had always condemn this hard working industrialist, that he is a stupid boy, he can’t marry you, he had always threatened Modupe, she also hated her father, only God knows why, but there is a bit perception that the secret that makes Modupe cry is linked to it.

In her mother’s room where she, her mother and her two other siblings live, Modupe went to bed that night crying, she soliloquized, I will summon the courage to tell him she said aloud whatever it is that will happen, the more she remembered how hazardous it is for her relationship, how hazardous it is for her father’s long time built reputation, it brought more pain to her, she had no solution to this four years old dilemma, WHAT KIND OF LIFE HAVE I COME GOD? She shouted rhetorically. Immediately the phone rang, it was Azeez calling, she didn’t want to pick and respond with her already lost voice; she missed his call for 5 times then he sent an SMS instead, LET US SEE BY TOMORROW, VERY EARLY THE MESSAGE read. Her mind skipped, she thought her secret had been exposed, she concluded to tell him everything even before he talks.

The next day came, right in front of Azeez in his father’s sitting room they were, how was your night he asked after he hugged her, it was fine she said remorsefully, he noticed she was moody he attempted speaking, she did also, unconsciously they both echoed simultaneously: I AM SORRY I DIDN’T TELL YOU ALL THIS WHILE!…………TO BE CONTINUED…………..
