IN THE LAND OF INTELLECTUALS: THE LION AND THE JEWEL

Indeed, the drama displayed by the Queen Idia hall and Nnamdi Azikiwe hall residents should be given no other title than being called a “Show of Shame in UI and the blank future of the Students’ Union” as shame has many definitions but going with the definition that “shame is something or someone that brings dishonour, unfortunate and regrettable things.

The University of Ibadan with no doubt has it 21st century agenda as “training graduates who are worthy in learning and in character” but with what has happened on Saturday where idiaites patiently waited to revenge the booing and “harassment” they got from Zik hall when they went there on their traditional rally or awareness patrol to inform the university of their hall week.

Compiling the different story version for Saturday’s incident and filtering the facts from fallacies. The first of the blame will go to Idia hall residents who knew receive those harrasement last week and kept quiet, not voicing out their voice for the university community but went back to their hall to pile up  “stale water” in preparation of the “uncivilized idia-zik war or War of ego between the lion and the jewel” that happened.

Zikites elders council and executive council would have averted this war if they had heed to the warning given to them from Idia hall executive council not to come and rally in their hall but rather went against that and even sent a message back telling them to do their worst. It won’t fair on us all if the Chairman, Students’ Union Security Committee who had about the threat and took zero or less action by not preparing the University Security personnel for the worst.

It’s so uncultured that the Queen of the jewel would say to her fellow resident that they should payback what the Lion brothers of Zik hall gave them last weekend and in the end they had their dinner destroyed getting to loose on both ends.

The lion brothers of baluba who felt their ego was bruised went back to their hall call for a congress in the presence in the Elders’ Council who don’t see anything good in other halls than the ego of their hall gave them and prepared for a supposed Final of “Uncivilzed Idia-Zik War” by moving ahead to have the dinner of the jewel destroyed. This is one thing that should be averted if not that they are ready to show the university lecturers and management that the agenda of training graduate who are worthy in character is a failed mission or rather a dream that can never be accomplished.

The Security Personnel who were to handle the matter and made it not have a title “UI breeds Hoodlums” on an online platform nowhere to be found when the matter started. From the reports gathered, only 10 men were available for night patrol; definitely not the ten men will be available for the war. How could 10 men be available for a campus like this when this is not a Federal unity school that has less land area than UI? We are complaining for security threats, if care is not taken, this is just the beginning!

As at Press time when reports were gathered from this incident, neither the Students ’ Union President, Mr Aliyu Olateju oladimeji nor the PRO, Mr Ayantola Alayande was available to make statement or have a release on what exactly is happening. Many do not even expect them to do so, since they are members of the hall and they cannot contain their fellow hall residents. Most of the University of Ibadan has seen the illuminating changes team as a “Zik agenda” having nothing to offer but only to occupy space and add feather to their ego

It’s Unfortunate to tell the University that their Mission will take the students nowhere if Changes are not made. The Council and the senate needs to set a new agenda that  will encompass building these set of students beyond the classroom and make them see more of the reality than only trying to achieve academic excellence and pretend inform of authorities to be worthy in character.
