HOW TO STAY HEALTHY AND FIT DURING THIS LOCKDOWN PERIOD

By Mercy Obas

Having a good health and staying fit is or should be something that we take as priority. Unfortunately, a large number of us find it so hard to live healthy and fit due to circumstances like the nature of job, having a whole lot of activities to do and all sorts. One thing is known and it is that exercising regularly and having a good diet aids a good healthy lifestyle. You can start now on a daily basis; take at least 30 minutes per day for a start to exercise and also cook healthy balanced meals.

Fortunately or unfortunately we have a lot of time on our hands to engage in activities that would be productive in spite of the Coronavirus pandemic. One of them would be on staying healthy and fit as there is a fat chance that staying indoors all day would result into unhealthy eating habits and lounging around the house. Here are some tips for us to follow in aiding a healthy lifestyle in this period. Enjoy!

  1. Always sitting? You have to get up and take a stroll!

A large number of the working class are always in front of the computer doing one thing or the other. This results into backache making it detrimental to your health. Why not get up and engage in physical activities, not compulsorily going to the gym as we are on a lockdown, but jogging round your compound, taking a stroll while listening to music or any kind of activity that you deem relaxing. Now do not make excuses that you cannot do it because I know that you can. Be determined and disciplined about it and you will see how you will make a lot of progress.

Oh and you can do yoga and even dancing by watching videos of them online. All these are beneficial to your health as it helps you lose weight and do away with negative vibes.

  • Are you a junks food ambassador? Eat healthy!

First things first please avoid eating junk food on a regular basis. It is not healthy and it is a poison when consumed regularly. Everyone loves a good treat of pizza, shawarma, ice cream, burger, carbonated drinks and the rest, but it should be a once in a blue moon event. Eating junks does not show how well you are healthy but shows how negligent you are of your health.

Obesity is a common sickness that is caused be eating too much and also indulging in junks. Now you do not want that right? Start cooking and eating meals that are balanced, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and also take it easy on salt, sugar and saturated fat. You may hate all these eating healthy pep talks, but wait and thank yourself for doing it latter in your life when you see how healthy you would have become.

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking

Now this is a very big one. I will go straight to the point; do you smoke and take alcohol? Do you want you and your family to live a long and healthy life? If the answers to these questions are both yes, then you have to QUIT. There are practically no benefits of taking alcohol and smoking. It only amounts to pains and suffering as it has been medically proven that smoking affects the lungs and taking of alcohol is one of the causes of diabetes. Also a person that smokes has a high chance of having his/her offspring asthmatic.

Seeing that nothing well comes out of engaging in these things, why not quit them and live healthy? Do not be shy to ask for help if you are finding it hard to quit. Talk to your family members and trusted confidants and I am sure that you will definitely receive help as there is nothing like a family who loves you and seeks for your wellbeing.

  • Drink a good amount of water everyday

Water, as they say is life and doctors say that a person dies faster from thirst than hunger. So we see that water is really life. One important thing that water does is that it causes the hydration of your body. This then results into good mental capacity, stables your sugar level and also causes the skin to be in good shape.

There was a time when someone I know went on a dry fast for three days. She took neither food nor water and on the second day her skin became hard. So we see that water refreshes the skin. If you do not take water on a regular basis, it results to tiredness and feeling fatigue which will then lead to dizziness causing one to faint. I am sure we do not want that, so let us endeavour and drink 2 litres of water per day. You do not need to measure the amount every day, but just make sure anytime you are feeling thirsty drink water immediately and do not procrastinate it.

  • Have a good mental orientation

The mind is the place where every battle is won. If you are defeated in your mind, then the result is evident in your physical activities and vice versa. Enjoy having an optimistic mind-set no matter what you are passing through. Yes it may seem hard but nothing is impossible except you make it impossible. Do not brood over situations, for it causes deterioration in the wellbeing of an individual.

When you are stressed do not allow it to take over your mind because immediately it shows in your body. Take out time to sit and have a reflecting moment breathing in and out, calming any raging storm in your mind. Get up and smile for you know that the storm is over now and you can see the sun shining, indicating that they are better day ahead to come.

Life is to be lived and enjoyed but not at the detriment of doing what you are supposed to do to keep your body and mind in check and in good condition. I will say again, take care of yourself and you will still thank yourself for it.

Stay safe and do not forget to:

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Use an alcohol had based sanitizer
  • Sneeze and cough into your elbows or if you use a tissue, dispose properly and wash your hands.
  • Maintain at least a 3cm distance from a fellow human being.
