A 300 level female student of the department of Computer Science was reported to have been rescued and rushed to Jaja on the night of Friday,24th of February, 2017, after being robbed of her belongings along St. Annes.

The victim had been robbed and jabbed on the right hand by an unidentified male figure before anyone came to her rescue.

In a conversation with her rescuer, who claimed to be a Katangite, he told UCJ UI that he had heard her screaming before he was able to detect something was wrong. On other accounts, it was said that the robber had escaped through the culvert before anyone could arrive.

UCJ UI correspondents were allowed to have a word with the victim after she was discharged from the dressing room. However, the effort proved abortive as she and her friends gave no account of the incident.

The chief security officer (CSO) of the University of Ibadan, who was also present, in response to UCJ UI on the action being taken to forestall such kind of incidences said;

“We will surely do something about it. As you can see, we have despatched our security agents to the place. There is a hole in the drainage, in which someone can pass and escape. So we will block the place with a strong metal bar so that no one will have access through the place anymore. We must thank God first that she was not killed, but she was stabbed in the right hand where she carried her bag with an object’.

On the issue of security on campus during the break, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) said, “the incidence of theft in the Hall was the fault of the porters because they were meant to secure the Hall. The security officers, who are securing the University environment should not be expected to come and see to the peace of the Hall at the same time. It is the work of the porters.”

He also added that “It is not doubt that those who steal in the halls are students and if not, some students have sent them. Another problem is with Nigeria where a criminal will be arrested and some people will come and beg on their behalf and ask for their release. We have arrested one person for ten times before he was sentenced. There is no one thief around, they are many and from different places. If those that were arrested were punished, many will learn.”

Although, the victim did not divulge any information to UCJ UI about what had happened, she had told her friends that she almost got raped by the thief.
