- I’VE TOLD ‘NIFEMI TO PUT IT (THE COMPLAINT) IN WRITING
As a part of the raging debate surrounding the decision of the Committee of Hall Wardens, the Vice Chancellor has added his voice saying the students should be able to manage their money.
This was a part of the issues UCJUI raised at the interview she recently held with the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka.
Prof. Olayinka recalled that the Students’ Union President, Ojo ‘Nifemi had intimated to him the problem in Zik Hall that the Assistant Hall Warden should be a signatory to the hall account as he quoted ‘Nifemi ‘“while a nineteen year old is managing a multi billion naira venture, why would we say students cannot manage their four million, five million naira? Afterall, their accounts would be audited at the end of the day.’ and I agree with him”
When asked whether he believed that the decision of the Committee of Hall Wardens should be reversed, the Vice Chancellor said “no, no. That is just my personal opinion. I’ve told ‘Nifemi to put it (his objection to the decision) in writing”.
The Vice Chancellor also recalled how he faulted the argument advanced by one of the proponents of the decision (the deputy Dean of Students) that “students have the tendency to mismanage their accounts” as he mentioned he replied saying “if they mismanaged the money, there would still be another way to catch them”
He concluded saying “if any student should run foul of the law, s/he would be arraigned before the Student Disciplinary Committee.”
