Saturday, 29th of November, 2014 was the final of the much anticipated Dean’s cup named after the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Professor Ajav. Civil Engineering department showed that they are the power horse of football in the faculty of Technology by defeating the lads from the department of Mechanical Engineering by two goals to one. Joel first put the Mechanical Engineering team ahead after a beautiful sequence of passes, aided by a lapse in concentration of the defenders. The results of two dubious fouls; a special training ground routine free kick and a well taken penalty, scored by Dapo and Chifum, were what the Civil Engineering team needed to defeat their opponents. The weeklong sporting event finally came to a delightful end as prizes were dished out to the respective finalists. The Head of Mechanical Engineering department, Dr. A.A. Dare was around to grace the occasion, cheer the boys and hand out the medals and prizes.
SU WEEK COMES TO AND END
_The Student Union Week has finally come to an end. The weeklong event started on Monday, 24th of November, 2014 with a colourful and action-packed carnival to mark the beginning of the week and flag off the much awaited and anticipated weeklong event in grand style. Also on that day, was an “Asun” night that took place at the Gamaliel Onosode Park. Another high point of the week was the VC’s half marathon which was won by Akindele Opeyemi and a novelty match later that day. The personality lecture then followed, the Guest Speaker in person of Governor Isiaka Ajimobi was adequately represented by his deputy, Chief Moses Alake Adeyemo. Ivory King and Queen was on Thursday as Onipede Oluwalonimi, a 200 level student of Adult Education, Faculty of Education and Adegbite Yetunde, a 200 level student of the department of philosophy were crowned Mr. and Miss UI respectively. Artistes such as Blackmagic, Spyrophreeze, Surely, Zorah, Pleikky and a host of others thrilled the crowds with their electrifying songs. The weeklong event then ended with the Campus blast on Saturday, 29th of November, 2014.
FACULTY OF ARTS AND TEDDER HALL WIN JAW WAR
_The rebirth of the University of Ibadan Central Literary and Debating Society’s public speaking event otherwise known as Jaw war has finally been concluded. In the Faculty category, Faculty of Technology lost to Faculty of Arts while in the Halls of Residence category, Bello hall lost to Tedder hall. The debate competition has continued to display the public speaking talents and prowess among students of the University of Ibadan. The preliminaries took place at the First Bank building, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry while the final of the debate contest took place at Trenchard Hall, on Wednesday, 26th of November, 2014, the program was themed “21st Century Unionism: Reviewing the past and previewing the Future as a Tool for National Development”.
AMES HOLDS DEPARTMENTAL WEEK
_The Association of Mechanical Engineering Students from Monday, 24th of November, 2014 to Saturday, 29th of November, 2014 had her annual departmental week to conclude a remarkable year of outstanding success. The week started with an awareness show, known as “PIMP IT”. The following day was an industrial tour to Procter and gamble, an excursion that involved seventeen students. Wednesday saw the students of the department of Mechanical Engineering perform sporting activities and play video games tagged “Game of Thumbs”. The public lecture on Thursday witnessed Engineer W. K. Adetoro, director, Nigerian Automotive Council, Abuja and an alumnus of the department, deliver a lecture titled, “Mainstreaming solutions for Virtual Unemployment of Graduates of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria by exploring opportunities in the Nigerian Automotive Sector” at Design Studio, ETF building. On Friday, was the variety night which took place at U&I. The week ended in grand style, with an exquisite dinner and Awards night at the Design Studio, ETF building on Saturday, 29th of November, 2014.
ZIK PRESS STARTS PRESS WEEK
_The press organization of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, Zikpress organization on Sunday, 30th of November commenced her annual press week with a superbly organized radio session which took place at the Porter’s lodge of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall. The radio session comprised of News segment, Interviews, debated discussions, Health segment, Entertainment segment, recent scientific and technological innovations and a Sport segment. Other events within the week include an interactive session, intellectual crossfire, publication from the archives, an excursion to Television Continental and Radio Continental and a dinner and Handing over ceremony.
FELA DUROTOYE STORMS UI
_Notable Motivational speaker and, Fela Durotoye on Wednesday, 26th of November, 2014 took the Trenchard hall crowd by storm, by addressing the students that were around for the Guest Lecture and Award of Excellence, an event organized by the Students’ Union. He later addressed the volunteers of the “Deliver The Future” tour of University of Ibadan at the Student Representative Council Chambers. Auditions for the “Deliver The Future” tour took place at various locations for three different categories. The advantage Campus Enterprise, Campus Speaker Number 1, and Positive Vibes occurred at SU PRO’s office, SU Conference room and Mellanby Hall SCR respectively.
ZIK HALL WINS CLASH OF THE SAGES
_The yearly program organized by the Literary and Debating Society of the great Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, “Clash of the Sages” was held again on Saturday, 29th of November, 2014 at Trenchard hall with Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall of University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo hall of Obafemi Awolowo University and Silver Hall of Bells University coming up against each other in a battle of wits and words. The program however started way behind schedule due to the lateness of the Obafemi Awolowo hall guys and was frequently marred by incessant noise from the camps of Zik hall and Awo hall. The topic of the debate was Nnamdi Azikiwe hall as usual, won the debate contest.
