UI Sports Captains Call Out Student Stakeholders’ Silence on Sports Development Demands

By: Adeyilola Joshua

The Unibadan sports team captains have expressed disappointment over the collective silence of key student stakeholders over their recent call to enhance sport development in the institution.

According to the Sport Captains, they are yet to receive a formal response from any of the various student bodies to whom the letter was addressed.

In the second letter released on the 21st of August, 2025, the body stressed the importance of a collaborative effort among student stakeholders including Council Faculty Presidents, Council Hall Chairpersons, Union of Campus Journalists, and Sports Directors (across all student constituents).

The letter also challenged students authorities ‘to show true leadership by: Officially endorsing and supporting the athletes’ demands, Joining in collective advocacy towards the University management, Mobilizing constituencies to stand in solidarity with sportspersons, and Using (their) platforms to ensure this issue is not swept aside.

As at the time of publication, UCJ is unable to confirm whether the Sport Captains have received any (official) response from the bodies addressed.
