The compulsory basic due in faculties and halls has been pegged at N3000. This was approved by both the Students Representative Council and the Students Affairs.
The SRC at its last sitting, held last month, approved N3,000 as the maximum charge for the basic due, granting a request by the Council of Faculty Presidents, and the the Council of Hall Chairmen/Chairladies, for an increment of the due from N2,500 to N3000.
The councils made the request in a letter sent to the house, arguing that N2,500 is not sufficient due to the rate of inflation in the country.
They promised to improve the quality of souvenirs and packages shared to Students.
Both councils also assured that that other dues will be optional, and that there would be accountability in the spending of dues this semester. Recall that there were reports of misappropriation of funds in some faculties, last semester.
In a chat with the Dean of Students, Professor Adekeye Abiona, he told UCJ UI that he had approved the increment, based on the understanding that things are now expensive.
He however warned that other dues, including orientation, shirts, dinner, among others, must remain optional for students.
He stressed that Freshers’ orientation is a compulsory ceremony, but should not attract an additional charge outside the basic due
