Okowa Commissions Auditorium in Wifes’ Honour, Call on UI Alumni To Keep Supporting The Institution

Delta State governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Asrthur Okowa, at the commissioning of a multipurpose auditorium, has called on UI alumni not renege in their support for the University of Ibadan.

The commissioning was done on Saturday, October 3 in honor of his wife, Mrs, Dame Edith Okowa. The governor, ably represented by the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, expressed his gratitude for the recognition that it will motivate his wife to do more.

The Governor stated that, “Recognizing his wife’s modest effort to change our world through her pet project, the 05 initiative, a  non-governmental organization with the vision of  bringing succor to the poor and vulnerable and giving them hope for a better future.

Since inception 5 years ago, the 05 initiative  has successfully operated feeding programme for the hungry, provided shelter for orphans and offered free medicare for the indigent.  By far, its biggest project yet was the establishment of 14 sickle cell centers including a Referral Centre in Asaba, within a short period of time.”

He pledged his continuous support for initiatives that will improve learning in the institutions and he also charged the management of the premier university to “ do everything to maintain  its frontrunner status among universities in the country. That means putting in place the right infrastructure that engender quality learning as well as hiring and retaining the best hands in terms of the academic staff

The alumni cannot afford to leave the job to the school administration alone, we must rededicate ourselves to the service of this citadel of learning with renewed vigor”

The VC, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, thanked the President of UIAA, Prof. Adewoye, members of the executive and the Governor.  He stressed the underfunding of the university by the Federal Government that “Even the government which is our sole proprietor could not fund us very well. We cannot but thank the alumni for giving back to their University.”

Prof. Adewoye, in her address, explained that the auditorium was named after Mrs. Dame Edith Okowa in recognition of her virtues and values as a product of  UI as well as her role to improve the lives of the less privileged in Delta State.

The Governor later launched the compendium of Who’s Who: University of Ibadan (1948-2018) Vol. 1 with Five Million Naira (N5,000,000).
