UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN ADOPTS NEW GRADING SYSTEM

The University of Ibadan on Saturday, 26 of February, 2017 announced the decision to change its grading system from the 7.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) scale to 4.0 CGPA scale.

The report came as a result of a memorandum on the official website of the institution and signed by Prof. M.A. Kehinde. This step was said to have been carried out in a bid to align with other Universities in the world and the recommendations of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Speaking through the memoranda, Prof. M.A. Kehinde said the decision was taken by the University senate at its meeting on 18 July, 2017. He mentioned that the minimum units to be taken at each level should be 40 units and 60% of it must be passed to guarantee proceeding to the next level. He added that all GES courses should be made to acquire the status of required courses with the exception of “Use of English I and II (GES 101 and GES 102)”.

Furthermore, the regulations guiding the withdrawal of students in the University in respect of the new system was stated as thus: passing less than 24 units in 100 level; less than 48 units in 200 level; less than 72 units in 300 level, and; the CGPA at each level must not be less than 1.0.

Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments were enjoined to ensure compliance. Uites have also shown mixed reactions to the development of the new grading system.
