An aspirant for the position of Speakership of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Onifade Abdul-Rahman Bello has said that Uites were ignorant of some of the policies carried out by the 5th assembly of the Students Representative Council as they were not carried along, this he said he plans to correct if he emerges as speaker of the 6th Assembly.
The 300 level student of the department of Library, Archival and Information Studies said this while speaking with UCJUI on his plans for the Students’ Union of the University in the Speakership position of the SRC.
Commenting on the impact of the 5th Assembly of the Council, Onifade, who is also the Speaker of the Faculty of Education Legislative Council, said “not that what the 5th assembly has done is wrong, it has done very well and as such I would like to sustain some of its good legacies and to initiate some ideas”.
Onifade, while talking about his plans if he emerge as the Speaker of the 6th Assembly said, “there has been the welfare report which has not been well implemented by the University authority. If given the priviledge to serve as the speaker, I intend to pressurise and support the executive arm of the Union for us to meet the School Management to implement the welfare report because it entails a lot of things that will bring about development of students in the campus”. He added that some security issues such as uncovered underground cables which can lead to the death of students will be tackled if he emerges.
The Honourable member of the SRC from the Great Independence Hall also mentioned that he would constitute a committee that would relate the activities of the SRC to the University community because in his words, “most Uites were not carried along from the grassroot”.
About the status of the Council of Faculty Presidents, the honourable said that they have been good collaborators in some activities and otherwise. He said “I think to a large extent, it is better to be controversial than to be inconsequential. What we need now is to rub minds in order to foster mutual intelligibility for the progress of the union.”
Commenting on plans for the Mote’s case, the aspirant said he believes the executive should be working on that mainly as the new exective council are to work on the report they got from the outgoing executives. However he said “what I can do is to support the executives in ensuring that we use all diplomatic measures to ensure that Mote is reinstated because he has been victimized for an offence he did not commit.”
While describing his vision for the union, Onifade Bello said his vision for the union is “to have a vibrant and intellectually inclined legislative arm.”
