UI’SU House Secretary Adeyemi Oluwasegun Resigns; Letter Surfaces Six Days After Submission

By William Olaleye

The House Secretary of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU), Adeyemi Oluwaseun Olamilekan, has officially resigned from his position. His resignation letter, dated November 14, 2025 was addressed to the President of the Students’ Union.

In the letter, Adeyemi stated that he was stepping down immediately from his role as House Secretary, noting that he had served with sincerity and dedication.

“I, Mr. Oluwaseun Olamilekan Adeyemi, the University of Ibadan Student’s Union House Secretary, hereby immediately resign from my office as House Secretary of the University of Ibadan Student’s Union, having represented the interest and the welfare of the students and Executive committee with my sincere and committed efforts,” he wrote.

Adeyemi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Union, acknowledging the support he received throughout his tenure. He added that he was moving on to a “new chapter,” while wishing continued growth for the Students’ Union.

The resignation letter which was void of any signature was also copied to the University management, the Students’ Union Executive Committee, the Student’s Representative Council (SRC), and the Students’ Union Electoral Commission (SUEC).

While Mr Adeyemi Oluwaseun’s letter stated that he would be resigning from his position as House Secretary immediately, the constitution of the student union by virtue of Article VIII(1 & 2) provides that notice of resignation should be submitted at least a month before.

_”Any member of the Executive Committee may, after giving, at least, one month’s notice, resign his/her seat_.”

“,_Notice referred to in (1) above shall, in the case of the President, be given to the General Secretary and in the case of any other member of the Executive Committee to the President who shall notify the Council… “_

This is an obvious contravention of the provision of the constitution. Also while the letter was dated 14th November, 2025, UCJUI can confirm Council was not officially aware neither did they receive the letter until 20th of November, 2025, 6 days after the letter was supposedly sent.

Speaking to Mr Adeyemi on why his letter was submitted so late to the council, he mentioned that he had written the letter since the day he wrote it (14th of November) and he sent it to the General Secretary who sent it to the President and then forwarded it to the council.

“So, the letter I had written it since that day and I submitted it to the General Secretary and I was hoping he will communicate with the necessary quarters that is to the President which he did{sic}. Then, later, the council, members of the council, that is the legislative arms, reached out, asking that it is the President that ought to send the letter to them and not the General Secretary. So, all those things. So, I guessed that’s the delay and what caused the timeline”

On further enquiries as to why he was still seen by eye witnesses driving the union’s bus even after he had submitted the letter, he explained that this was only in cases of emergencies when there was no one to drive the bus.

“I submitted it (the key) to the president, and, but I can’t remember taking it, the only time I remember was there was a time where there was an emergency to the health center and there was no one to drive the vehicle, but people have been, like, I’ve assigned it to people to drive for healthwise sake. Then this morning during exam, people were late for exam, nobody was around to take the vehicle, so, I had to just take them to the center. So, that’s all. I have not been driving the vehicle. Sometimes, I sit inside, but I don’t drive.” He explained.

It is important to note that the UI’SU constitution provides in Article VIII(2) that after resignation or termination from office that has no deputy, a bye-election be held within 30 days of said termination or resignation.

“_(2) Notice referred to in (1) above shall, in the case of the President, be given to the General Secretary and in the case of any other member of the Executive Committee to the President who shall notify the Council. In the case of the President and General Secretary, the Vice-President and the Assistant General Secretary automatically step in. Where there is no deputy, a bye-election should be organized within 30 days._”

Whether the Student Representative Council will take on this is still unknown. Precedent has however shown that when student union executive members have in the past resigned to run for another election, no bye election has been held.

In the case of Mr Richard Oladeji, the House Secretary in the 2020/2021 session, according to an IndyPress article, he had resigned before September 29, 2021 to run for a the presidential position and no bye election was held to fill the position of house secretary which was left vacant until November 14, 2021, when the Adewole Adeyinka (Mascot)-led executive council was inaugurated. Also, when Mr, Olamilekan Michael Ajibola(Oma) resigned from his position as the PRO of the Union in 2022/2023 session to run for the position of the Presidency on June 4th 2023, no bye election was held to fill the position leaving it vacant until July 4th 2023 when the Samson Tobiloba (Host)-led Administration was inaugurated.

Seeing as the UI’SU election is slated to hold 13th of December, 30 days after the letter of resignation written by Mr Adeyemi was sent in, and inauguration of the elected individuals will take place only after that, the question whether a bye election will be held might arise.

As at press time, attempts to reach RT Honourable Shoge Quadri, Speaker of the 12th assembly, to get more information on the stance of the council as regards Mr. Adeyemi’s delayed letter and whether there would be a bye election has failed
