‘The only relevant test of the validity of a proposition is the comparison of the prediction with experience -Milton Friedman
The utmost aim of a leader is to meet the need of his people through service and loyalty. This is the more reason why democracy will remain popular as long as it puts the people first. The congress held at Queen Idia Hall on the 24th of October, 2014 brought some issues to the fore, prominent among which was whether or not to merge Queen Idia Hall’s Dinner with the Variety Night. At this juncture, one must commend the genuineness of the hall Executives for deeming it fit to include the entirety of Idiates in deciding what concerns them. It goes without saying that they are not oblivious of the fact that decisions like this are best taken together.
We at Queen Idia Press believe that Idiates are entitled to the whole truth because only correct and factual information can form the basis of sound judgment. Therefore, a critical appraisal of the proposition of the hall executives on holding the dinner and the variety night the same night is apt for the moment.
Dinner and Variety Night are prominent features of the annual hall week of Queen Idia Hall. In fact, some will rather regard the dinner as compulsory because the dinner fees has been charged with the annual hall dues paid at the beginning of the session. In the same vein, the Variety Night is as well important as it produces Miss Idia year in year out.
The executives have premised the need to merge these two events on a number of factors; with the secondary reasons woven around the major reasons. According to them, it is economical to merge the Dinner and the Variety Night considering the amount of the proposed venue. They added lastly, that it will be to the advantage of Idiates as they will gain free entry to the variety night.
The reasoning of the executives seems good, but we must not be unmindful of the peculiarities of these two events. The Queen Idia Hall’s dinner is a social gathering where dinner is eaten; (emphasis here is on ‘where dinner is eaten) while awards are given to deserving Idiates. The atmosphere expected in a dinner setting is one that will put Idiates in a relaxed mood devoid of tension. On the other hand, Variety Night as it sounds is the night of varieties with Miss Idia Contest as the major feature. It is characterized by tension on the part of the contestant and anxiety on the part of Idiates. The Variety Night requires a long duration of time to accommodate the varieties that qualify it, thus, merging another program with it will not only translate into supreme tiredness for Idiates it will also over burden the organisers.
Another pivotal issue is the fact that entry tickets are normally sold to Uites including Idiates to gain entry to the Variety Night. If the dinner is merged with the Variety Night, it could only mean that we will have our dinner in the presence of Uites from all walks of the University. This may not be a problem to many. But for what it’s worth, some categories of Idiates will not be comfortable with having other Uites watch as we dine.
Finally, if Idiates must take a stand on this issue, they must be in the know of the surrounding circumstances and background information. The Executives should endeavour to furnish Idiates with the information they need to make this decision. They are entitled to it.
Idiates, do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it or simply because it is spoken and believed by many. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But if after observation and analysis, you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and adopt it. |
