During the ongoing SRC plenary, while answering questions on the state of the union address, Covenant Odedele, the Students’ Union President made excuses for the Union’s suspension of the Congress.
Earlier during his State of the Union address, he acknowledged the effort of the SRC in passing the resolution to hold the Congress on the stated day, but it could not hold because a quorum was not reached.
He noted that the desire of the student populace for a Congress must not overshadow the need to follow due process to avoid having an illegitimate gathering.
A question was raised to him by an Honourable from the ABH constituency about how, given that the last Congress was unsuccessful, what efforts were being made towards reconvening another one.
In answering this question, the President merely reiterated his points on how the issue of the quorum and the rain that afternoon meant that they could not go ahead with the Congress.
He mentioned that he would be working closely with the SRC to see how another Congress can be convened as soon as possible.
In light of this, it is left to be seen when a new Congress would be convened. Proceedings still continue on the floor of the SRC chambers.
