TECH PERSONALITY OF THE WEEK
Just as we bring notable personalities to you week in week out. This week is not an exception as a man who seeks global change storms the board. Our personality for this week is the Current President of Industrial Engineering Students’ Association (IESA).
_
Please can you introduce yourself
I am Igbinedion Kingsley, a 500 Level student of the department of Industrial and Production Engineering.
Family background
I hail from Ovia-south west, Edo state. I was born on a 1st of October. I was given birth to by Late Mr. Sunday and Mrs. Ellen Igbinedion but I was brought up by been Mr. and Mrs. Omesu due to the death of my biological father in the year 1996. I am eldest of three children.
Likes and dislikes
I like integrity, sincerity and open minded people. I dislike dishonesty and self-centeredness.
Best moment in U.I.
Wow!! ! I have a lot. But, one was in my 100 level days when I had the highest mark in Chemistry 157 test which made everyone eager to know my matric number. Thereafter, I led my class to being the best and most influential class in 100 level.
So what factors could you say were responsible for the perceived success?
Over the years I equipped myself with leadership qualities and I have mentors and coaches who have always trained me and served as pace setters for me.
How did you equip yourself with these qualities of leadership?
First of all, I joined a youth foundation and they trained us to be good leaders. I was also exposed and encouraged to read books by people who have gone far ahead.
Worst moment in U.I.
My worst moment in U.I was having to get a 1 point in STA 111 after putting all my friends through sequentially even few minutes before going into the examination hall. The questions I saw were entirely ‘beans’ not until I saw the results, they all got 7 points and I got a painful 1 point.
Most challenging course ever taken
TEL 231 (Applied Electricity)
You initiated the E-nnovators idea, what is it all about?
The idea came up well after my 200 level. I had a vacation outside the country and saw a lot of things that really caught my attention on every outing we made. But all I had always known in Nigeria was complains upon complains which I totally object to. Because I always believed that there was a solution to every problem. Each day after my outing, I would sit down quietly and write the things I observed and the ideas I got. That was in December 2011, so in January 2012 during the subsidy strike I conversed with my mentor who encouraged me to read 50 books that were going to broaden the horizon of my knowledge. Thereafter, I went to the bookshop and bought about 30 books just in a day and I read them from time to time. Since then, my mind never remained the same and I finally decided to start the whole idea of E-nnovators. I discussed it with a couple of friends who bought my idea and it became a reality on campus.
What is the vision and mission statement?
To help improve the leadership ideas and qualities in students, to bring out the problem solving part of every member and to organize tutorials for students around the faculty.
Can anyone be a member?
Yes. No fee is attached except for #500 which enables you to be a registered member.
As regards the group/organisation, how far have you gone?
I would say that we’ve gone very far and still trying to do more to empower the students.
Is it personality driven or purpose driven?
It is purpose driven.
When you leave U.I, what’s the probability of its continuous existence?
The probability is 80%. Presently we are working on starting a conference tagged graduate of the 21st century which happens next year and also help the coming generations see the need for a change.
Favorite food
Yam and egg.
Are you in a relationship?
No
How do you manage your academics and the whole iesa thing
Firstly, it’s the grace of God that has kept me this far. I prioritize my life following the principle of first things first.
How would you rate the performance of the TESA executives?
Well, I would say they are trying their best.
Can you tell us something tangible you have done since you assumed the post of IESA president?
To start with, I love to improve any system in which I find myself. As a result of that, we had a very quality IESA book coupled with the welfare packages that has never been given before. We also won the gala cup. IESA’s excursion is around the corner, where are the places of interest and why?
Actually, we had four places in mind, but for now, we will be going to Nigeria Breweries out of the options of Procter & Gamble (P&G), Nestle and . perhaps, early next year, we embark on another excursion.
One word concerning your administration?
Do you make friends easily?
Very very. I have a lot of them around.
What is unique about you?
I am myself and don’t try to be like others. Also, my passion for imparting lives and problem-solving.
Some people think Kingsley has it all. What don’t you have?
[Tight corner]…I lack the ability to say NO to issues even when it becomes so overwhelming to me.
What’s your advice to techites?
Know who you are.
Keep friends that will take you to your destiny.
Never forget your Maker.
Philosophy of life?
The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you are but how happy others around you can be.
Thanks for your time
You are welcome!
