The House Secretary of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, Oluwole Ayomide, popularly known as Sanjay, is directing funds meant for the Union into his personal account, the Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council, Omotunde Olamide, has alleged.
The Speaker, in a letter to the House disciplinary committee on Thursday, a copy of which was reviewed by UCJ and confirmed through multiple members of the legislative house, noted that the House Secretary has also been illegally charging for use of the SRC chambers.
“It has come to the attention of the House Leadership that the House Secretary has been illegally charging for use of the SRC chambers and directing these funds to his personal account.”
“This action has taken place without permission nor knowledge from concerned authorities and is in direct violation of the Constitution,” the letter, signed by the Speaker, read in part.
The action of the House Secretary is a direct contravention of Article V (5) Students’ Union Constitution which mandates that the “Treasurer shall receive, and account for all the Union’s monies derived from all sources.”
‘Determine The Extent’
In the letter on Thursday, the Speaker mandated the committee to investigate to “determine the extent of the deviation from the established financial procedures, the cumulative amount involved, and any potential impact on the financial integrity of the union.”
“The Committee is also expected to recommend appropriate disciplinary actions based on their findings,” the Speaker added.
This investigation into the House Secretary represents the first major case of financial concerns coming to limelight since the new set of Executive Council members took office.
When contacted by UCJUI for his side of the issue, the House Secretary, argued that he did no such thing.
“I haven’t collected any illegal dues from anybody and I didn’t divert any funds into my personal account,” he told UCJUI on whatsapp.
When presented with a copy of the letter from the SRC, he simply responded that “the disciplinary committee will do her work.”
