“NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES TODAY ARE A LITTLE BIT OF CARICATURE” – DAPO OLORUNYOMI

The publisher of Premium Times and award winning investigative journalist, Dapo Olorunyomi, has expressed displeasure in the current state of the Nigerian Education system.

He made this known in an interview with UCJUI at the completion of the Premium Times Center for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) workshop for campus journalist. The program which started on August 17 and went on for three days, till August 19, featured sessions on understanding the craft and context of accountability media and investigative journalism, data journalism and many more.
While giving his opinion on the present state of the Nigerian education system as regards the ASUU strike, Dapo Olorunyomi made it known that “knowledge is the destiny of any society. And if you cannot invest overwhelmingly on your knowledge industry, you are wasting time”.

“Truly, Nigerian Universities today, so far as facilities for learning (are concerned), are a little bit of caricature and we should be very angry about that “, he added.

The veteran journalist who had earlier conducted training sessions of PTCIJ workshop on innovations alongside Deji Adekunle, had reemphasized the need for innovations in the Nigerian education system.

“I was reading the other day, Femi Falana was saying the registrar of JAMB helped save six billion… How come that you save six billion for JAMB in just getting forms. That means a lot of these other agencies, somebody’s been touching funds a lot there. All that money could be channelled back into the University system. A whole lot of new thinking is important… Innovation is important to renew our thinking about those problems that we see and the kinds of solutions that we need.”

He also added that we cannot stay fixated on one solution but we should keep thinking about them always. “We will see that we can make a fundamental breakthrough”, he concluded.
