New Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Demola Lewis Addressed Student Leaders at Town Hall Meeting

By: William Olaleye

The recently appointed Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Demola Lewis addressed the gathered student leaders and representatives gathered at the Town Hall meeting called by the Students’ Union Executives on Friday, 5th of September, 2025

He stated that he had planned to meet with the leaders individually but decided to take advantage of the Town Hall Meeting being held at the SRC Chamber.

In his address, he touched on a number of issues affecting the student body and his plan of action against them.

He stated that he would be heavy on hall renovations and get the University committed to it in any way possible.

“We’re working on hall renovations… We’re trying to get the the University committed to this however we are able,” he said.

He also advised students to engage respectfully with the relevant authorities and work closely with them.

He advised against sending open letters containing strong and forceful language to University officials, highlighting how “We demand…” in such a letter could come across as confrontational.

He added that students would be included in as many committees relevant to their welfare, as possible.

“We’re ensuring that for reasons of collaboration, students are in nearly all committees. If students are in the committees, they should contribute and pass on what is said to their leaders.” He said.

He also stated that students are required to obtain permission from the University for group outings and trips. He added that it was insurance, a part of their fees.

“No group of students in UI should leave UI for a trip without seeking the permission of the authorities… You pay for insurance in your fees.” He said.

He added that the approvals must be sought a week to the proposed outing to ensure a smooth application and approval process.

He also assured the student body that he has got their backs covered.

“Just know that your backs are covered and that there’s hardly any day that we’re not interacting with your student leaders.” He stated.

Circling back to the issue of collaboration between student leaders and the University management, he emphasized the need for collaboration and civilized discussions.

“We’re going past the gbo-gbo gba-gba era… We’re now sitting at tables and discussing.” He concluded.
