CASE 4: INDY HALL REFORMATION- A HULKING SAGA

Adedayo A. Erivic

One cannot underestimate the prowess of University of Ibadan’s Katanga republic especially when it comes to oppressing other halls of residence with her alluring beauty and elegance. “The only living hall”, as she is often referred to, is always a place of great social activity and serene environment. However, all these great qualities began to debilitate into past glory as the serene environment was taken over by dirty toilets, water-logged bathroom and a lot of ugly sights. This sudden deterioration will trigger one to ask; will the management do nothing to restore the antecedent glory of the only living hall? Sequel to this event, the University management inflated the accommodation fee. This inflation is one that ensued a great uproar among residents of the hall and all students in general as it appeared like one is paying for a work not well done. Many had even attributed this sudden decision of the school management to the absence of a functional student Union. The union of campus journalist, during the past few months, had taken the complaints of the students as their major concerns and had penned down words showing the disinterest of students towards the sudden hike in accommodation fee as well as the untended situation of the halls of residence. One could assume that the efforts of the Union of Campus Journalists will yield no result but futility. Not so long after, breathtaking projects began to emerge in different halls of residence and independence hall was not also left out in the refurbishment.

MAJOR AND LAUDABLE CHANGES.

NEW WATER CLOSETS: WOW! WHAT A CLOSET

If you constantly patronize Indy hall toilets before they got renovated, you will surely understand what it means to have new ones. Apart from the fact that the old water closets are ripped up with mud and stains that had clung so hard in a way that washing only makes them noticeable the more, some of these closets are already broken and this poses as a major threat to the security of lives of students. Have a little slip and your head will be hurrying down to hit sharp ceramic edges. Right now, Indy water closets are clean and comfortable, thanks to the management.

INSTALLED SHOWERS.

Respective bathrooms now have showers affixed to them. One cannot sideline this major achievement as this simply infers that students can now access water supply for use on their various floors and bathrooms. Students will also have great access to enjoyable bath. Thanks to the management.

THE REPAIR OF RAILINGS.

Prior to the major renovation embarked upon in Independence hall, one major thing of disgust is the railing. They are either slanted or detached, thanks to the constant batter it had received over the years from jubilating students and others who are lost in the spirit of Aroism. The railings in Independence hall not only got repaired, they are now firm as weak and bent steels were replaced for good conditioned ones.

One cannot overemphasize the great works going on in the hall and the management is highly appreciated for turning a listening ear to the consistent plea of the students. However, in a way to strike remembrance and not to complain, there are still some necessary things needed to be taken care of in the halls of residence. These things shall be talked about without wasting words.

ASPECTS IN NEED OF REFORMATION IN THE HALL.

NAKED WIRES AND SOCKETS THAT COULD SUCK HEALTH OUT OF STUDENTS.

There are tons of naked wires and faulty sockets still existing in some rooms and the kitchenettes. These wires and sockets are extremely dangerous that they can claim lives at any time if they are not taking care of. Many had tagged Indy residents as zoo occupants due to the funny and dangerous ways they get their chargers, extensions and minor power-consuming implements connected. To avoid a major problem that costs of sockets won’t solve, we hope the management help look into this.

RIPPED NETS THAT COULD GET ONE RIPPED OFF VALUABLE GOODS.

One could note that a major concern of the school management is the security and protection of the lives and properties of students. However, no lives can be protected and no properties can be secured if nets are torn. Torn nets will only serve as easy route of entry for intruders especially when the sons of men are fast asleep. Laptops can get wings and fly off like birds and valuables can crawl off like snails. To avoid this great evil from befalling residents of Katanga republic, we humbly call on the intervention of the management.

Apart from the ones listed above, other aspects that need quick intervention include:

  • The rampant issues of bed bugs burgling beds and cupboards in the hall.
  • Exposed soak away that constantly suck fresh breath away from students’ nostrils.
  • Bad locks that could spell bad luck on any innocent student even when he has the appropriate key to the door. This is because all other keys can either open these locks or no key at all can open them. Not even the originals.

We’ve seen other halls of residence, India is a testimony. And we know of the awesome works that were done there. In view of this, we know Indy hall will not be forgotten especially in the continuation of good works.
