Vice –chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole stated that students can now earn degrees online. He made this known on the 4th day of the ongoing 66th convocation ceremony of the institution which started on Friday, 7 November, 2014 with a Convocation Jumat Service at the Central Mosque, University of Ibadan by 1pm and proceeded with the Convocation Church Service on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at the Chapel of Resurrection by 10am. The Convocation Lecture ‘Federalism, Democracy and the Future of Nigeria’ was later given on Tuesday, 11 November, 2014 by His Excellency, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregesola, Executive Governor, State of Osun, at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan by 4pm. On Thursday, 13 November, 2014 at the International Conference Centre, Professor Adewole said that the university has provided access to education for those who wish to study at home while doing their jobs, through the Distance Learning Programme. A total of 135 students graduated from the Distance Learning programme, one of whom made a first class and 14 others, second class (upper division). The VC said that the University has continued to take giant strides at repositioning itself on the same page as the rest of the world. With great pleasure he also announced the forge-proof e-certificate which has 8 invisible security features and he said it will bring to an end attempts by misrepresented certificates issued by the university.
Adewole, while commending the graduants urged them to always have it in mind to give back to the institution that made them. “Your contribution will go a long way to sustain the tradition of excellence of which you are beneficiaries” he said. The week long ceremony however continued on Sunday, 16 November, 2014 with a command performance of Wole Soyinka’s play ‘ALAPATA APATA’ at the Arts Theatre, University of Ibadan by 6pm and admission to Higher Degrees (Doctorate) and Award of honorary Degrees to some eminent personalities will come up on Monday, 17 November, 2014.
