A Peng Black Girl

By Loveth Arikanki

One, two, pick the afro,
Three, four, let the coils grow.

Five, six, keep them twist,
Seven, eight, comb them straight.

Nine, ten, it’s a high puff crown,
Eleven, twelve, then smooth locs down.

Thirteen, fourteen, braids in tight,
Fifteen, sixteen, knots it right.

Seventeen, eighteen, cornrows sleek,
Nineteen, twenty, a peng black girl.

Editor’s note: This was a piece originally published by Queen’s Hall Press on World Afro Day
