The Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, is set to host former Nigerian President and military Head of State, Chief Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo, at the 2026 edition of its “Storytelling with Legends” programme on Saturday, 17th October 2026, at 11:00am at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan.
The event, organised by the University’s Department of School Library and Media Technology, with the theme “Preserving Heritage, Inspiring Generations, Learning from the Legends”, is designed to create an avenue for students and members of the University community to learn directly from the experiences of prominent figures.
Obasanjo, who will feature as the distinguished storyteller, is expected to share experiences from his years in public service and leadership with participants at the session.
The former Head of State served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and later as the country’s elected President from 1999 to 2007.
His participation gives the programme an opportunity to draw lessons from a figure whose public career has spanned military leadership, democratic governance and international engagement.
The 2026 programme will be the latest edition of an initiative by the Department of School Library and Media Technology that uses storytelling to connect younger audiences with people whose experiences can provide historical, educational and leadership lessons.
The initiative was previously held in 2024, when His Royal Majesty Oba Rashid Adewolu Ladoja, then Olubadan of Ibadan, featured as the storyteller.
According to Dr Alice A. Bamigbola, Acting Head of the Department of School Library and Media Technology, Ladoja shared his leadership experiences with more than 500 pupils during that edition.
Bamigbola announced Obasanjo’s participation in the 2026 edition during a Faculty of Education lecture in August, where she also highlighted some of the department’s other activities, including Reading on the Air, reading remediation programmes for pupils of Abadina Primary School, World Book Day celebrations and School Library Month activities.
The choice of Obasanjo for this year’s programme places his experiences at the centre of the department’s effort to expose younger people to lessons from notable Nigerians.
The event’s theme similarly links the sharing of personal experiences with the preservation of heritage and the transmission of knowledge between generations.
The programme is expected to draw members of the University community to Trenchard Hall, where participants will have the opportunity to listen to Obasanjo’s account of his experiences and engage with lessons from his years in public service.
