At the Swearing-in Ceremony of the new student leaders of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) held today, Thursday, 5th of February, 2025, at the Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Prof. Ademola Lewis urged the newly inaugurated student union executives to cooperate with the university management.
At the inauguration, in his Opening Remark, the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Demola Lewis, noted that the contemporary era of students unionism is “an era of strategic engagement”, in which gone are the days when students union vandalised the institution’s properties to propel their needs.
Also, he emphasised that “there is hierarchy in authority”. As he noted, student leaders cannot “have a Congress and say what we have discussed here is binding in the university. You have to report to the university management”.
He encouraged cooperation between the students union and the university management making reference to the kind of cooperation achieved in a Ghana university, the University of Cape Coast, whereby the students union and the university management cooperated to build a 1500 capacity SRC Hall of Residence.
In his conclusion, he asserted that, “we are going to fix our halls of residence with your cooperation”.
