NUGA ’25 Updates: UI Shines in Judo and Athletics as Chess Events Halt

On day 6 of the ongoing NUGA 2025 competition, the University of Ibadan contingent had outstanding performances with medal hauls in judo and athletics, a setback in the male football competition, and a halt in the chess games.

In the judo events, the University of Ibadan team continued their show of strength, acquiring positions in the top three. In addition to the seven medals acquired in the individual sports by the judokas in the NUGA 2025 competition, the University of Ibadan judokas were able to secure three medals, adding to the medal tally of the University of Ibadan contingent.

Mathew Deborah Chinenye secured the gold medal in an individual judo event, while Bello Olajide added to the tally with a Bronze. The University of Ibadan judokas came out second in the team judo shiai, securing the silver medal for the team sport.

This brings the University of Ibadan judokas to a total of 10 medals, having 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals, marking one of the best performances by the University of Ibadan contingents in the NUGA 2025 competition.

On the track, Ibrahim Oladele clinched the gold medal in the men’s triple jump event. The men’s 4x100m relay team also remain hopeful with final qualification results expected on day 8.

In the swimming category, the University of Ibadan swimmers added two medals to their medal tally. Alimi Olanrewaju claimed the silver medal in the men’s 50, freestyle race, while Balogun Aishat earned bronze in the women’s 50m freestyle.

The University of Ibadan male football team, the UI Pioneers, crashed out of the NUGA’25 competition with a loss in the quarterfinal stage. The UI Pioneers fell 1-2 to the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA).

Despite the mixed results, the University of Ibadan contingents continue to show resilience and competitive spirit across all sports as the NUGA competition moves into the final stretch.
