Now You See Them

I was having a conversation with my friend last week and then she said “you never knew what you are getting yourself into when you decided to go to the university.” I stuck a spot in my mind and then I began to wonder what she meant by that. It was later in the week that it occurred to me that the session will soon be over and new set of students will be matriculating soon, the old students will also be moving to the next level and some would have completed their four or five year courses.

Last week, the university began registrations for the new intakes for the 2014/2015 academic session. Then I asked   myself ‘do these people really know what they are getting themselves into?’ Or do they also have this kind of question at the back of their mind? Well, I don’t want to answer that.

What are you getting yourself into when you decided that you were going to the university? You will agree with me that it entails a whole lot of things: time management, freedom, multitasking and many more. Some came, they saw and they conquered. Now that we see the new students (jambites), what lies ahead of them we can’t say… I see them happy; I see them going about their registrations with so much energy and so much enthusiasm. They can afford to stand in the heat of the sun just to get registered; they can tolerate lot of “nonsense” now. We all were in their shoes at some point and it’s funny now that you see them do those things you did then that you can no longer see yourself do anymore.

Now that you see them, you wonder what will happen after the first semester or first session, what has happened to the zeal, the enthusiasms and the happiness they wore at the inception…?
