The Literary and Debating Society University of Ibadan held a Press Conference on Saturday May 17 at The Infinix Resource Center, to announce the modalities and time line of the Jaw War 2025 Event.
At the Press Conference, the draws were also made for the hall and faculty pairings during.
The draws were moderated by the President of the Union of Campus Journalists, Olashile Ogunrinu.
Speaking at the Conference, the President of TLDS, Babatimehin Peace gave a background to the Jaw War Event.
“JAW WAR is an annual debate competition among all halls of residence and faculties in the University of Ibadan.
“With this being its 11th edition ever since its revival in 2014, the competition has grown in quality and intensity and now boasts to be the largest intellectual student event not just in University of Ibadan, but in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa at large.”
He also stated that the theme of this year’s edition of Jaw War is “Africa in the 21st Century and Beyond. Rethinking Power, Progress and Possibility”
In explaining the modalities, he stated that the second leg for the JAW WAR Hall Round will be reintroduced in this year’s edition of the JAW WAR Event.
Also released at the conference, was the approved order and timeline of events for JAW WAR’25.
The breakdown of this year’s events is as follows;
17th May – Press Conference,
18th September – First leg of Hall Round
16th September – First round of Faculty Category
19th September – Second leg of the Hall Round,
23rd September – Quarter Finals for the Hall and Faculty,
30th September – Semifinals and
18th October – Finals.
For the first leg of the Hall Round, Lord Tedder Hall( Supporting) will go against Obafemi Awolowo Hall, Kenneth Mellanby Hall( Supporting) against Alexander Brown Hall, Sultan Bello Hall( Supporting) against Independence Hall, Ransome Kuti( Supporting) against Idia Hall and Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall( Supporting) against Queen Elizabeth II Hall.
At the first round of the Faculty Round, the Social Sciences will be taking the bench, being the defending champions, and battle it out with the Best Loser for the second leg of the Round.
Meanwhile, the Faculty of Science will go against Basic Medical Sciences for this round, Faculty of Nursing will speak against Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Environmental Designs and Management against Faculty of Tech, and Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources against Faculty of Education.
Still in the first round, Faculty of Agriculture will go against Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Arts against Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Pharmacy against Vet Medicine.
There will also be a total of 34 debates at the JAW WAR 2025.
TLDS also introduced the Engr. Kayode Adegbayo (Olomo) Best Speaker Awards.
“This award will be presented to the best speaker in each round of the competition. Each recipient will receive a cash prize of ₦10,000 alongside a commemorative plaque, in recognition of their excellence.” The President of TLDS stated.
