The aspirant for the position of Treasurer in the forthcoming University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI SU) elections, Bioku Joshua, has condemned the recent increase in student levy from ₦200 to ₦1,000, describing it as unfair and lacking in transparency.
Speaking on the matter, he highlighted the lack of student involvement in the decision-making process and called for more transparency from the university management.
“The problem was a general problem from last session where everything was increased. It was done without informing the students, and that is not good enough. Students should have been carried along. Also, the management should give something similar into the coffers of the Union,” Bioku stated.
When asked how he would handle the issue if elected, Bioku emphasized the need for collective action. He pledged to hold congresses with students to analyze the reasons behind the increase and explore possible resolutions.
“It cannot be a sole fight. As the Treasurer, we would hold congresses to analyze the reasons for the increase,” he said.
