The University of Ibadan Students’ Union Representative Council (SRC) convened on Friday, December 6, 2024, for its second emergency sitting to review the proposed budget for Students’ Union Week.
The meeting, chaired by Rt. Hon. Opegbemi Matthias Busoye, Speaker of the 11th Assembly, focused on evaluating the proposals submitted by the Vice President of the UISU, Boluwatife Aboderin and the Finance Committee.
The Vice President’s initial budget proposal total N17,599,987.5. However, following a review by the Financial Committee, chaired by Hon. Wareez Olosho the proposed budget was revised and scaled down to ₦11,647,072.50.
Key allocations in the revised proposal include:
Carnival and Rally: ₦1,226,000
Cooking Competition: ₦131,500
Health Day (Sponsored Items Included): ₦247,700
Variety Night: ₦2,934,500
Pageantry: ₦1,400,000
Super Cup: ₦882,500
Personality Lecture: ₦1,455,100
The Financial Committee’s adjustments saw a reduction in the overall allocation for publicity and other auxiliary expenses, shifting focus to core activities of the Union Week.
Despite the disparity between the two budgets, council members refrained from raising questions about the differences during the session, focusing instead on reviewing the Financial Committee’s revised breakdown.
The budget remains under review, pending further discussions and subsequent approval.
During the deliberations, the Students’ Union President, Aweda Bolaji, emphasized the need for realism in budget reviews, urging the SRC to strike a balance between austerity and ensuring the success of the Union Week. He argued that excessive cuts could undermine the Union’s vision for an engaging and impactful event.
