
The University of Ibadan has inducted 37 Nursing students into the nursing profession and awarded first-class honors to five graduating students.
The ceremony, held at the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre, was marked by inspiring speeches and a renewed commitment to the nursing profession by the management of the College of Medicine. The graduating class consists of thirty-seven (37) students.
The first-class graduand are Olaniyi Faith Iretioluwa; Yusuf Kadijat Adewumi; Balogun Sekinat Olamide; Oyerinde Deborah Olajimoke; and Adegoroye Fumilayo Ademiju.
In her keynote address titled “Who Will Nurse Us Back to Health,” Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Olayinka Omigbodun, emphasized the crucial role of communications in the nursing profession.
“As a nurse, communications is essential, both verbally and in writing. Communications are very essential and you’re so crucial to excellent healthcare delivery. You have the unique training to minimize miscommunication and ensure effective patient care,” she stated.
Professor Omupodun highlighted the significant responsibility that nurses bear in alleviating patient pain through compassion, urging the new graduates to embody the principles of empathy and professionalism in their practice.
The provost also addressed the broader challenges facing the nursing profession in Africa. Citing World Health Organization statistics, she noted that Africa requires an estimated 4.5 million nurses, yet many universities in Nigeria are accredited to train only 60 nurses per year.
The Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Faruq Abubakar Lawal, while formally receiving the inductees into the nursing profession charged them to embrace the core values of respect and ethical standards while discharging their works.
He also admonished them to continue to pursue excellence, prioritize self-care as well as maintain a worthy work-life balance while embracing innovation and seeking opportunities.

Adejumo; Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. Oyeronke Odunola; Dean, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and Provost Elect, Prof. Temidayo Ogundiran; President, Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association Worldwide, Prof. Dipo Otolorin; Elders in the Nursing Profession; Secretary to the College, Dr. Emmanuel Odedele, among others.
