
The newly constituted 10th Legislative Council of the Students’ Union, at its ongoing inaugural sitting is set to elect principal officers which will manage the affairs of the Assembly.
The positions to be filled in the Assembly include Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Clerk and Chief Whip.
As observed by UCJ Correspondent, elected honorable members of the 10th Assembly had arrived early for the inaugural sitting as they listened keenly to the grand plans of the two aspirants contesting the Speakership position in the new Assembly.
The two aspiring members of the Assembly for the position of the Speaker are Honorable Gbenuola Oluwole Fopefoluwa and Honorable Olamide Omotunde, representing Queen Elizabeth Hall and Alexander Brown Hall respectively.
At the inaugural sitting, erstwhile members of the 9th Assembly, and observers from Halls and Faculties were gathered observing the proceedings.
In his remarks, Honorable Olamide Omotunde noted that if elected he would strengthen the foundation of the Council, empower Honorable members through training, enhance the council standards, organize parliamentary visits and collaborations, as well as to forge a cohesive Union, that aligns both the legislative and executive councils.
In her separate address to the new Assembly, Honorable Gbenuola Oluwole Fopefoluwa mentioned that she would organize capacity building workshop for honorable members, introduce legislative newsletter and revamp the council’s online presence, establish a comprehensive Legislative Resource Centre, create an office of the Council’s spokesperson, draw an unanimous legislative calendar, among other plans.
As of the time of this report, the Council was preparing ballots to determine the majority votes.
