World leaders congratulate Tinubu, winner of Nigeria’s controversial presidential election

The candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress, Bola Tinubu, was declared winner of the February 25, 2023 election, fraught with manipulations, intimidations, violence, and deliberate disenfranchisement.

Many Nigerians, including the two runner-ups, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, have rejected the results of the election, each claiming that he won the election.

During the exercise, there were reported cases of violence in various states, including Lagos, Rivers, Imo, Kano, and Kogi, among others.

Regardless, world leaders could not just wait for the election to be concluded so they can send congratulatory messages to the winner. President Muhammadu Buhari and many world leaders have praised the conduct of the election as credible.

Aday after the Lagos State godfather was announced the winner by INEC, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France sent their congratulatory messages while also stating that the election was a representation of democracy. But at home, The election outcome seems to be threatening Nigeria’s 24-year-old democracy. African Leaders also extended their good wishes to Tinubu. The AU, Ghana, Niger Republic, the Republic of Benin, and South Africa, among others, sent congratulatory messages.
