Falz, The Activist

Folarin Falana popularly known as Falz is the son of a famous civil rights lawyer Femi Falana. Falz is also a lawyer but not a practicing one. Falz is one of the few Nigerian celebrities that have fully evolved into an activist.

Most of Falz’s songs speak against one societal ills or the other. Falz also uses his social media accounts to speak out against corruption and to proclaim his support for social justice.

It all began when he released “Wehdone Sir”. It was song that sarcastically condemned the corrupt politicians, yahoo boys and other harbinger of social ills in the society. His biggest activist song is arguably “This is Nigeria”.

Falz through this song touched on almost everything wrong with the Nigerian society, from the mismanagement of public funds, internet fraudsters, the ineptitude of some Nigerian leaders to the supposed exploitation of some Nigerians by so called Religious leaders, and sexual harassment of people by the so called Religious leaders. He also talked about many more ills in that song.

The single “This is Nigeria” ripped through every corners of the society. There was even talk about it being barred and censored but the song in its essence criticised the Buhari’s administration for its perceived negligence to Nigerian’s plight.

After this, he went on to release another single titled “Talk”. This single was released shortly before the 2019 election. The most significant part of the single was the part where Falz criticised the harassment of people that dared to speak against the Buhari led administration.

Now to his latest single “Johnny’’, Falz focused on the extra judicial killings done by the Nigerian Police and Police Brutality. Through this, Falz told the story of many Nigerians who have extremely suffered in the hands of the now defunct special anti-robbery squad and other arms of the Nigerian Police. He also spoke about the extortion of Nigerian citizens by the Nigerian Police. That single, Johnny, was a huge statement against Police Brutality and SARS.

Falz also came out during the #ENDSARS protest to protest against Police Brutality and in support of ENDSARS. During that period, Falz also used his social media accounts to educate and orientate people about the political happenings in the country. He also used his social media accounts to support the #ENDSARSmovement and to share useful and valuable information.

For sure, Falz was one of the major front runners of the #ENDSARS movement, not because of his celebrity status but because of his doggedness and patriotic spirit. Falz will always be valued by Nigerians for summoning enough boldness and courage to speak out against powerful people. It can also be said that everybody loves FALZ THE ACTIVIST.
