The word ‘mind your business’ has been used and abused overtime. I tried defining and understanding what is meant by this word and I discovered that it is used in describing someone who deliberately decides not to interfere in the affairs of others. A familiar case is found in the soap opera ‘jenifa’s diary’ where jenifa says ‘I am minding my own businesses’. I have discovered that we often say we want to stay out of people’s affairs and businesses but still we find out that we still find ourselves hovering around the affairs of others and one will ask, why?
The society has been created in such a way that we cannot exclude ourselves from the lives of others. In one way or the other we find ourselves connected to each other. That is why we feel hurt when someone is doing what he or she is not supposed to do. Individuals have the right to their choices and their will but we cannot allow the will of others affect the progress of things. The fact that someone likes to smoke does not mean we should allow he/she do the act where a small child is.
It is good not to interfere in the affairs of others as it gives room for privacy and independence but we cannot say because we want independence we should leave others to do what they like. Concern is one key thing in the society. It makes everyone part of you and you a part of them. Seeing someone going the wrong way and calling the person to order is not a bad thing to do at all. If we leave the society to the concept ‘mind your business’ all we will have is a society full of disorder as no one will watch the other’s back.
If we mind our business, others will suffer for it and in return we will also suffer for it. Narrowing it down to the academic world, if we claim to mind our business in the sense we are familiar with others will fail for our lapses.
Mind your business has been misconstrued for lack of concern. The fact that you do not want to poke- nose into other people’s affairs does not mean you should not care when they make mistakes or they do the wrong thing. Care is a very important foundation for friendships and it strengthens bond and unity. We cannot live in a society that lacks care and concern for others as it is what brings about communal interaction.
One thing is certain; we can never live independently of others. We exist because others are also in existence, and our living is dependent on them. If we are alone in the society, the society won’t be conducive enough to stay. The welfare and concern of others should be paramount in our hearts as it will be done back to us. MIND YOUR BUSINESS BUT REMEMBER TO SHOW CARE AND CONCERN FOR OTHERS.
